Classical instrumentalists participate in various large and small ensembles, including orchestra, sectionals, studio classes, small ensembles, and an array of chamber groups.

Classical pianists participate in a diverse assortment of classes, including piano repertoire class, studio class, 4-hand piano, and a variety of chamber groups. An emphasis is placed on sight-reading, as well as opportunities to perform with other students.

Jazz instrumentalists and jazz vocalists participate in various large and small ensembles including jazz band, Latin jazz band, R&B ensemble, and various combos. All jazz students take classes in jazz theory, jazz history, and improvisation.

The musical theater curriculum includes acting, vocal coaching, and audition techniques. Singers develop their vocal skills and dramatic interpretation, as well as gain valuable performance experience, as they rehearse and prepare for the summer’s culminating musical theater productions. Performances are fully staged with sets and costumes.

Composition majors participate in small group forums where they explore various topics in contemporary composition. Students will compose a new work that will be performed and recorded during the program, offering them a genuine experience as a composer.

All students have a private lesson each week, a daily music theory class, and up to 3 daily electives. Performance opportunities take place throughout the summer in Manhattan School of Music’s state-of-the-art performance venues.
